I was the CTO of a real estate company for 6 years. Then one day the board of directors fired the CEO and replaced him with an investment banker that never ran a business before. As soon as he took over he made a statement that he is going to replace all of the older workers with younger people. Right away I saw where that was going.
The COO who was a racist (she did not like anyone white) ordered my assistant who was half my age to spy on me and report back to her, the CEO and the CFO. My assistant even went a few more steps putting the screws to me.
Then in March of 2012 the COO brought me into her office and terminated me. It was obvious that it was an age thing based on the speech the CEO gave. She was practically orgasmic when she fired me.
Since then I have sent out over 6,000 resumes, applied through over 480 employment agencies, attended numerous job fairs, networked my ass off. I was even told by the NYS Department of Labor that I would never work in my industry again and to "get it though your thick skull that you (meaning me) will never make anything more than $30K" (that is a direct quote).
I even work with 4 career counselors to no avail. They all tossed in the towel when they saw their efforts were not getting results. Two of them will not even look at me any more. I tried another one but she simply turned her back on me.
I attended numerous networking classes and events to no avail. At one which was run by a recruiter stated that she worked hard to get one person a job by calling him and working with him. Yet here it is I have been out of work for a long time she never once picked up a finger to help.
At another networking group that was run by an accountant wanted everyone to go into business for themselves for that was what he was doing. I told him that was not for me. He became indignant and told me to get some therapy. Hey, not everyone wants to go into business. It takes a lot of money and the risk can be too much depending on the type of business. I am simply not up to it.
With the employment agencies that I apply through 99% of the time I ever hear back from them. So I wonder if they even got my resume in the first place. Of the 1% that do respond I am told that the position that I applied for does not exist but they have me in mind for something else and will get back to me. They never do.
A couple of employment agencies picked up my resume from one of the job boards. About half of them sent me on a wild goose chase while the other half simply yanked my chain.
My former co-workers do not keep in touch with me anymore. At first there were some emails back and forth then they stopped writing. I try and contact them but nothing.
The people that I have been networking with have not gone anywhere. So much for what the 'experts' claim, that the best route to your next job is through networking...bull shit. I have not seen any evidence of it.
I have tried contacting the CEO's and Presidents of various firms to try and get a foot into the door that way. Most of the time I never hear back. Other times I get the standard jerk around 'your resume is very impressive but...' and that goes no where as well.
The former CEO of my last company started another business. He had me do some computer work for him, not much, not even enough to put food on the table. All it did was create tax problems for me. I asked him to broker some introductions for me for maybe that would lead into something. He refused.
Even when I reached out to past vendors they all went"'Bill who?" To think they made money though me now when I need some help they turn their backs on me.
That brings up another thing, at one of the networking groups I attended one of the members said that they found out that when you ask for help people are kind enough to give it. Guess what? I've asked for help, even begged, pleaded, gotten on my knees (figuratively) and have not received one once of help. So much for people being generous and kind.
I even wrote to my assembly woman for help and all she did was talk my ear off and I could not get a word in edgewise. But she sent me to see a guy who's business is failing and she thinks the world of this guy. Even he jerked me around when I saw him. A total waste of my time and energy.
My networking attempts even extended into the social media world. Facebook and LinkedIn. Oh I have quite a few 'friends' or connections. Not one of them has been any use except for some minor research.
One of the things that I want to do is get out of New York. Were I live it is THE most expensive place in the country to live plus the over crowding and health issues makes Long Island a place to avoid. Not to mention the growth of gang violence and drug becoming epidemic.
Our inept governor is not doing a thing to make life better here. All he is doing is giving tax breaks to companies to stay in NY. But who picks up the tax bill from there? The home owners that is who. As far as helping people get back to work he has not lifted one finger to help. Cuomo as got to be one of the worst governors New York as seen.
The area where I want to go would be the Florida Keys. The cost of living there is a lot lower than here and Florida's employment market is a lot better than New York. I went as far as to looking at which of the islands would be best to move to with the best employment outlook.
With the few people that are willing to talk to me from there I get different stories. Some tell me that it is a great place to live and I should come down and make the Keys my home. Others have told me just the opposite and that is it is too expensive to live there (then why are they there), there are no jobs (like in NY?), the houses are well over priced (they are half of what we have in my town), I would not like it there.
Even one person who works for the KWPD insinuated that I should not move there for I would not be welcomed. Crazy thing, he is not a native to the Keys either and he for the most part told me to stay home. Looking at some of the Facebook posts from people who live in the Keys echoed his feelings that outsiders are not welcomed there.
From the Facebook aspect, all people do is post funny pictures, sayings and argue over the most stupid things around. No real networking. I just might close my account I am so disgusted by it.
Even LinkedIn is a waste. I have about 1,500 connections and not one of them has been of any help. Oh they say publish or share articles this way you get in front of the right people. I've tried that and have been kicked out of groups. One of the groups was about Key West which as you know is where I would like to go. Crazy thing is that the group owner is in Chicago. Does that make any sense to begin with?
Even contributing to group discussions has been a waste. For when I so, the trolls come out of the woodwork and attack. So why even bother?
Now after 3 1/2 years of spinning my wheels uphill and getting no where, watching our money disappear faster that shit through a goose makes me want to toss in the towel. If things do not turn around soon, we are going to have to tap what little money is in our retirement accounts. From there? Who knows, but at this stage I do not see a paycheck in my future.
OH, BTW, did I ever tell you, New York sucks.
Sick of New York State
I am tired of living on Long Island and would like to move to Key West. But in order to move to Key West I would need the right opportunity. I was the CTO of NYSE Listed REIT and I have a lot to offer not only to a company in computer support, but to the residents of Key West.

9/5/14 - Moving to the Keys, Monroe County vs. Nassau County
I am not ashamed in stating that I yearn for the opportunity
to move from Long Island, NY to the Florida Keys. Before I make the leap I did some research on
moving to the Keys to see what other people have experienced in doing the same. This brought me to a particular website, “Island
Jay, not a worry in the world” by Jason Guarino. He has a blog entry entitled “Moving to Key
West Florida and the cost of living” dated August 12, 2013. It focuses on how expensive it is to move and
live in Key West and does a nice job to try to persuade people from moving
there.
In my own virtual social circle from Facebook and LinkedIn,
people from the Keys have also told me how expensive it is to live there and
that if I really wanted to live in Florida, I should stick with the mainland
and not the islands. I spoke to one
person in Key West that insisted that I give up on the idea of moving there or
to the Keys for that matter due to the high cost of living and lack of jobs.
That took some wind out of my sails but not for long. I decided that is was time to do a lot of due
diligence and dig deep into living in the Keys as compared to where I currently
live. I will give you a spoiler in
saying that Jason is right in some respects.
From where I sit he really did not compare costs at all. Maybe if he was comparing say Nashville to
Key West he might very well be right.
But when it came to my area, well I’ll let you see for yourself.
First, Key West is located in Monroe County in Florida. For my research I used Monroe as the overall
basis for I have no idea which island I will land on. My home town of Port Washington is located in
Nassau County NY and I am going to use that as the comparison.
In Jason’s blog, he mentioned to ‘Get a job lined-up.’ That does make some sense in doing any form
of relocating regardless of what part of the country you are moving to unless
you are wealthy, retired or both.
Looking for a job in the Keys would be difficult but not impossible and
can be accomplished after you relocate.
Talking to my network does echo some of the sentiments about the job
market there. The bulk of the industry
so happens to be tourism and hospitality.
But there are other industries there as well and it would take a little
effort to root them out.
As of June 2014, the unemployment rate for Monroe County was
3.5% while in Nassau County is a whopping 4.8%(1). Jobs simply do not exist in Nassau County, I
should know for I have been looking for two and a half years with no
success. With some cleaver marketing and
networking you should be able to come up with a job in the Keys, even if it is
not in your industry quickly enough.
Jason goes on to something that we all need, ‘Find
housing.’ How true, for you do need a
place to stay. Jason says that rents
average between $1,200-$1,800 a month.
Here in Nassau County rents range from $1,500 for a roach infested dump
up to $4,000 plus utilities for a 2 bedroom apartment and higher. I have seen ads for rents as high as $10,000
a month for an apartment here in Nassau County.
But the best course of action is to try and buy a
house. The money you spend on rent can
go to a mortgage and you build equity.
In the long run depending on the down payment, a mortgage might even be
cheaper than renting.
The housing market in Monroe is a far cry better than here
in Nassau. The average home values in
Monroe are $425,143 while in Nassau they average $646,882(2) a whole
52.2% higher. Of course do not forget
that these are averages for home values can range from a minimum average of
$273,100 to a maximum average of $2,449,000 in Nassau and a minimum average of
$345,600 to a maximum average of $477,100 in Monroe(2).
One thing that comes with home ownership is property
taxes. The median property taxes for
Monroe County is $2,673 with a tax rate of 0.97%. While in Nassau County the median property
taxes are $8,625 with a tax rate of 1.23%(3). Nassau County so happens to have the second
highest property taxes in the nation with Westchester County NY being the
highest.
But the costs do not stop there, for you have to pay for
utilities and here we begin to see a swing in the opposite direction with one of
the utilities.
Fresh drinking water in Monroe can cost $21.80 per month
while in Nassau it is $16.44(4) per month. For these figures I simply assumed that you
would use 1,000 gallons per month plus the added utility fees.
Natural gas which is used for heating and cooking costs less
in Monroe. With just the base charge for
service and fees and using only one therm of gas in Monroe you would pay $11.50
while in Nassau County it would run $16.54(5).
Since I mentioned heating, I tried to ascertain heating oil
costs for the Keys and was not successful.
Do they use heating oil there? By
going through our heating oil bills we paid on the average of $4.525 for a
gallon of oil in 2013. Heating season
for the most part runs from October through March where I live. Each drop of oil was around 250 gallons and
in some months we had 3 drops per month.
In total we used about 3,000 gallons of heating oil. With sales tax that ran us $14,745.84. Even with that we kept the thermostat at 68.
Finally the big thing that home ownership brings is the cost
of electricity. Here we get a wakeup
call that will make you scratch your chin.
In Nassau County we pay 19.03 cents per Kw/Hr while in the Keys the rate
is only 11.21 cents per Kw/Hr(6).
In Key West which was the focus of Jason’s blog they pay 13.76 cents per
Kw/Hr. It is also interesting to note
that LiPA, now PSE&G who services Nassau County has the 28th
highest electric rates in the country.
The Florida Keys Electric Co-Op ranks as the 921st highest
while in Key West they are slightly higher as the 265th
highest. Right off you can see
electricity in the Keys as a whole is a lot cheaper.
Jason mentions that food costs run higher as well but leans
towards eating out being more expensive.
That really is a lot of common sense to begin with. No matter where you live, eating at restaurants,
sub shops, delis and what have you is always more expensive than home
cooking. The Keys has two main
supermarkets, Publix and Winn-Dixie and here in Nassau the two big chains is
Stop & Shop and King Kullen. I
compared the weekly sales papers between them and found that the prices are
pretty much neck and neck. So food
shopping at a supermarket is going to be the same for the most part. Of course there will be exceptions depending
on the product.
Jason stated that regular gasoline runs 10% more in the Keys
than in the mainland. I looked at Gas
Buddy which posts gasoline prices for the nation and averaged out the prices
between Monroe County and Nassau County.
On the date of my research, I found that regular gasoline in Monroe runs
an average of $3.54 while in Nassau it is $3.76 a whole 6.2% higher(7).
Regardless of what you buy in the end there is always the Spector
of state sales tax. What is unique
Florida has a 6% tax and New York is only 4%(8), but add on tax for
Monroe County of 1.5% and Nassau with 4.625% you wind up with 7.5% for Monroe
County and 8.625% for Nassau County.
Speaking of taxes, New York has a state income tax of 8.82%
while Florida has none(9). That alone
has a lot of value and is a very good incentive to move to Florida regardless
of which county or town.
At the end of the day we find that the cost of living in Key
West is 10.3% above the national average with a score of 110.3 while the cost
of living in my town of Port Washington is a lot higher at 59.5% above the
national average with a score of 159.5(10). My town is 44.6% higher than Key West. So as far as the high cost of living in the
Key West, well that has been tossed out of the window in comparing it to living
in my home town.
Just for the heck of it I checked out the cost of living in Nashville and found that the index is 90.1 which is 9.9% less than the national average(10). So for here Jason hit the nail square on the head. And I am sure there are many other areas of the country that are less expensive to live in than the Keys. After all 10.3% higher is not exactly thrifty but comparing to 59.5% higher, I'll take the Keys any day.

But costs are not the only factor in considering to
relocate. The local environment plays an
important part as well. Jason mentions
that the Keys might be a great place to visit, but it is not a good place to
raise a family due to drunks and low rated schools.
Researching the schools I found that there was no national
standard that the schools can be measured up to. Each state has their own set of standards and
I found no way to correlate them against each other. Florida as the FCAT and New York has the
regents.
The best information I was able to find out is how each
school ranks against the others in the state and as such I used that for my
comparisons. Out of 574 schools in
Florida, Key West High School ranked 182nd in 2013. While in New York in my home town the high
school ranked 154th out of 1079 schools (11). Without crunching numbers it is apparent that
my local school was much better.
So there might be some truth in what Jason said but at the same time there are far lower ranked schools in Florida as well in NY, a lot in my own backyard. But again I have not been able to find any national standards which the schools can be measured by. With the availability of the internet and on-line course, many which are free, all a person needs is a little motivation and they can excel at any subject regardless of the ranking of a school. Like a professor I know has said, a school or course is only as good as the effort you put into it.

There is some truth as far as crime is concerned. Looking at the crime statistics for violent
and property crime as per the FBI, Monroe County has a much higher crime rate
than Nassau County. Even Key West has a
higher crime rate than Nassau County overall. But that does not mean people are in the streets shooting up the place daily. After all it is not the wild west.
To put this into perspective, let's say in one year Nassau has 1 robbery. In the same year Monroe has 4 robberies. That tells you Monroe has 400% more crime.
To put this into perspective, let's say in one year Nassau has 1 robbery. In the same year Monroe has 4 robberies. That tells you Monroe has 400% more crime.
Based on the figures from 2012 for violent crime Nassau
County has a rate of 122.3 cases per 100,000 while for Key West it is 823.8
cases per 100,000. In my home town it is
only 10.5 cases per 100,000. Violent
crime here has been defined as murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible
rape, robbery and aggravated assault(12).
Property crime is no better for where I live the rate is 606
cases per 100,000 and for Key West it is 6,123 case per 100,000 with the bulk
of the crimes being larceny and theft(12).
The bulk of the violent crime cases involved
aggravated assault which in my opinion gives some credence to the drinking issue. People get drunk and then can wind up in a
fight, or worse. Plus were these crimes
from tourists who think they can get off the ship, commit a crime,
re-board the ship and sail away free? Or could it be people from the
mainland thinking they go to the Keys and commit a crime since they are
isolated? Maybe a combination of all 3? But that does not mean the Keys is a bad place to live.
Should these two factors deter any ideas of relocating? I don’t think so nor should it. One needs to take some prudence in their safety no matter where they live. But it does pay to keep a weather eye out.
On the flip side of the coin if you avoid those areas then
you should not have any problems. As an
example in Nassau County there are some real shady areas where you should avoid
at all times, like New Cassel, sections of Westbury, Freeport has gone downhill
as well as Hempstead, a good section of Roosevelt, Manhasset has a rough section as well as Glen Cove and other areas. If you avoid trouble you will stay out of
trouble,
Should these two factors deter any ideas of relocating? I don’t think so nor should it. One needs to take some prudence in their safety no matter where they live. But it does pay to keep a weather eye out.
Cancer is one thing that we are all concerned about and for
many reasons. Reviewing the statistics
from the State Cancer Registry and the CDC’s National Program of Cancer
Registries Cancer Surveillance System, over all Nassau County has more
incidents of cancer than Monroe County with the exception of esophagus, lung
and bronchus, oral cavity & pharynx and finally liver & bile duct(13). The first three can be attributed to smoking
and the third to drinking giving more credence to Jason’s statement “An
excessive amount of public drunk people.”
So from a cancer standpoint, living in
the Monroe County is much healthier.
It has been well documented that one
source for cancer and other health issues can arise from toxic waste dumps or
superfund sites. These areas are
generally filled with all kinds of toxins that not only can make you ill but
can down right kill you. Superfund sites
seem to exist all over in one form or another.
I looked at the amount of superfund sites in Monroe and Nassau
Counties. Based on the EPA, Monroe
County has only 3 such sites while Nassau County has 22(14), 633.3%
more than Monroe. And what is very scary
to me, there are 8 of them within 5 miles of my house with one superfund site
right in my own town. Not very
reassuring that is for sure.
Another factor that needs to be taken
into consideration is the air quality.
Now I was unable to drill down the air quality for each of the counties
so had to work with a more gross set of statistics that covered much larger
areas. The areas are New York-Northern
New Jersey-Long Island, NY-NJ-PA and Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, FL(14). All in all the air quality for the Florida
areas is much cleaner and healthier.
Health is one thing that I brought up from the previous
paragraphs and it is obvious you need a good health care system. Part of that are hospitals which provide
crucial care for the ill and injured.
Looking at the hospitals that service Monroe County I see that there are
only 3 with a total of 217 beds. That is
pale in comparison to Nassau County that has 11 hospitals totaling 4,953
beds. Two of the hospitals are within 15
minutes of my house. One being a
nationally recognized cardiac center with 305 beds and one has a major trauma
unit along with oncology, bariatric surgery services and more with 806
beds. Of these 11 hospitals one
specializes in pediatrics with 164 beds.
With this amount of hospitals health care is at the cutting
edge.
At the same time Monroe County has a population of 76,351
while Nassau County has 1,352,146(15) so it reasons that Nassau
County would have more beds.
So at the end of the day there are some advantages in living
in Nassau County but not many. It is
cheaper to live in the Keys than in Nassau over all. But in all fairness to Jason, Key West could very
well be more expensive to live in than say Nashville TN, or Antler OK. But as compared to Nassau County, NY I
honestly cannot wait to move there.

11/7/13 - Bike Stolen
One of my sons bought a Specialized 29" mountain bike so he could ride in charity events and for getting back and forth to the local train station where he then commutes off to work. With the add-ons he put on the bike and all said and done the bike ran a little over $900.
To protect his investment he bought a Kryptonite bike lock. The clerk at the bike store removed the lock from the package and tossed the package and paperwork out. Strike one.
He rode the bike back and forth to the train station, locked it up and never had any problems. He took the bike into NYC to do a charity ride as well ans had plans to do many more.
He was able to get a ride into town on November 7, 2013 and was brought to the train station to retrieve his beloved bike only to find that had been stolen. So much for the Krptonite lock. He couldn't find remnants of the lock either for the thief took that as well.
He went to the police station and filed a complaint. In my son's favor he registered the bike with the police and the bike shop has a record of the serial number as well.
The police told my son they know who stole it. But because they did not see the bastard do the crime they cannot touch him unless they find him on the bike. They also told him that this guy uses a small hydraulic cutter he keeps in a bag on his shoulder. The bastard sees a bike he wants, snips the lock in a matter of seconds and is off with the bike.
Since the police know who is doing this why don't they pay him a visit with a search warrant? Of course that takes too much effort and the police here would rather hand out traffic tickets than do any real police work.
And what about the MTA? Where are their security measures? Webcams are cheap enough today and there is no excuse in why one was never installed to help protect commuters bikes. If they did and looked at the video's I am sure that they would have the criminal in custody. It is too much to expect them to put a transit cop at each station like they did right after 9/11.
Then again I doubt they would even look at the tapes. My daughter's purse was stolen and the crook used her credit card to by train tickets from the machines and those record your images. The Nassau County Police never once contacted my daughter or reviewed the recordings from the MTA ticket machines.
I spoke to the bike shop the next day and learned that there has been a rash of bike thefts. Two alone on that Friday.
Six months ago there was another rash of thefts, but the police were able to capture the criminal. The criminal came from the town of New Cassle, an area where you do not stop your car for any reason what so ever. But this time the police are not taking any action to stop the thefts or recover the bikes.
Speaking with the bike shop it is very doubtful that the bike will ever be recovered. And with the fact that the clerk in the bike shop threw out the package and paperwork for the lock my son was not able to register the lock with Kryptonite which has an anti-theft guarantee. So much for that.
Now my son is heart broken over the loss of his beloved bike that he worked so hard to buy and the local police just do not care. I learned that there is a pissing match going on between the local police and the MTA on who's jurisdiction it is. But that does not help the fact that some bastard is using the train station as their private bike store.
At the end of the day, my son had to cough over another $900 for a new bike.
Ya gotta love NY...not.

Working on a new entry
Things have been crazy here over the past year and I have not had the chance to update this blog.
I am working on a new entry and hope to post it soon.
In the meantime, remember "I H8 NY"

8/13 - Fate and our trip to the Keys
Do you believe in providence, karma or fate?
I planned out a trip to the Keys this summer. The game plan was to take the Amtrak out of
Penn Station to Miami. From there grab a
hotel for the night then rent a car.
Drive to the Keys and get a room at the Sombrero Hotel in Marathon. Why there? Cost and it is in the center of
the Keys for the most part. We would
leave late in July and come back to NY (yuk) the first week of August.
While there I wanted to reach out and meet face to face some
of my FB friends. Lunch or a drink or
two, or something like that to BS a bit.
I’m not going to mention who I wanted to meet here. I want to learn firsthand the business
climate there and see where I can market myself to prospective employers. After all I specialize in network / computer
support and webpage design plus have a lot of marine service experience as a chief
mechanic and parts manager from working in a yacht dealership.
Of course while there do some ‘tourist’ stuff. Things like hanging out at Mallory Square during
sunset, lunch at the Hog’s Breath Saloon, a brewski or two or three at Sloppy
Joe’s, maybe lunch at the No Name Pub. Watching
the Dolphins at the DRC. And enjoy
sitting on the beach just letting time slip away.
Next thing you know, my pathetic below poverty level
unemployment ran out. There is no way I
could finance the trip on that but it did supplement what we have. At least it would have paid for a few nights
at the hotel.
Because of the stoppage of funds the trip is now on hold,
again. Please feel free to insert some appropriate
language here, I know I did.
As you would have it we were hit with yet another
tragedy. My sister-in-law who lives in
Phoenix had two CVA’s with the second being pretty bad. For those who do not know what a CVA is, it
is a Cerebral Vascular Accident or a stroke.
We have been on the phone with her and her husband on a daily basis.
There is improvement and she is now stable and out of the
hospital, but there is a decent amount of damage.
It was decided that we are going to have to drive, you heard
me, drive to Phoenix from Long Island.
My wife refuses to fly and the train is totally out of the
question. So we are going to rent a car
and three of us are driving the entire distance. It will not be cheap and it will not be
comfortable. But it is something that we
have to do, for what if. We are leaving
NY on 9/1 and hope to be back 9/11 of all days.
Of course if things for her get worse then we are going to bump the trip
up sooner.
I figured that with the three of us taking turns driving we
should make it in about a day and a half depending on traffic and how we hold
up. But I am allowing three days each
way to be on the safe side.
I guess there was a reason as to why we never made it to the
Keys in July. Providence, karma? Who knows?
But I am NOT giving up on my dream or plans on going to the Keys.

8/3 - NY Afforadble Healthcare, what a joke
Everyone is aware of the ObamaCare law which mandates that all Americans have affordable healthcare. But the law does not state what is to be considered affordable.
Case in point, in New York they came up with the affordable heathcare reform on the heels of ObamaCare. Looking at the New York Affordable Heathcare site paying from $3,000 to $4,000 a month is considered affordable. I would like to know what Governor Cuomo has been smoking. I don't think many indviduals can afford that unless you are very well off. Cuomo has always been in favor of the rich and could care less about the working class or the low income.
Of course there is Healthy New York. This plan for a family of two will cost just over $1,000 a month. Better than the Affordable Healthcare but still not affordable. Healthy New York does not cover anything much. No durable equipment, only a hand full of medications, and if you need surgery you are better off grabbing the kitchen knife and doing it yourself. So for the most part Heathy New York is a waste of time and money.
Next is Family Health Plus. This is a free program and it covers a lot. Unlike Healthy New York it will pay for durable equipment, most medications, most surgical procedures, doctor visits and more. It is a great plan but it is very difficukt to get into. Your household income must fall between a certain amount. Even with New York Unemployment which already is way below the national poverty level is far too high of an income to qualify for Family Health Plus.
Next is Medicaid. In Nassau County you have to sign over everything you own to the Department of Social Services who administers Medicad here. You cannot have any savings for at least three years prior, have to sign over your life insurance to them, cannot have any retirement, if you own a home that must be signed over to DSS, if you own a car that must be signed over to DSS unless you can find someone who will pay for the car insurance, gas, maintenance, and if there is a note on it they have to take that over. Also with Nassau DSS ypu are not allowed to be in debit to any credit card agencies for they consider that a luxury. And the big kicker, you cannot have anyform of income at all for three years. Gotta love Nassau County.
Once you get onto Medicaid the care you get is pathetic at best. Beyond substandard.
To add insult to injury with Medicaid in Nassau County, let's say you are on it for a year and then finally get a job, something that does not exist in New York, Nassau DSS will garnish 50% of your salary to get paid back. If you had a surgery during that year, you will be paying them back for the rest of your life. So once you get onto Medicaid in Nassau, you will never get off it.
How do I know this, we were being forced to go that route and when we learned how much we would lose we backed out. Plus a neighbor of ours had to go onto it. She was forced to sign over everything to Nassau DSS. DSS allowed her to live in her home with her mentally disabled son. When she died and before she could be put into the ground Nassau DSS evicted her son onto the street then turned around and sold the house.
Now in December the minimum wage is to go up to a whooping $9/hr. Do you think with that people can get health insurance? Let's do the math, shall we?
NYS Minimum wage ($) 9.00
Times a typical work week(hr) 40
Gross weekly salary 360.00
(Less 25%) taxes (90.00)
Net weekly salary 270.00
Times weeks in a month 4.5
Net monthly salary 1,215.00
Right off the bat you can see that the new minimum wage of $9 that takes affect in December cannot possibly cover what New York claims to be affordable healthcare. Mind you the figures still do not cover rent which is an average of $1,600 a month in Nassau, food for a family of 4 can run $200 a week, gas for a car and more. Without the health coverage you are running into a deficit.
Governor Cuomo obviously does not care. So as far as affordable health care in New York, there is none.

6/30 - Using socail media
As many know, my job search is going no where fast. I've sent out close to 2,000 resumes, registered with 150 employment firms, attended cattle calls (job fairs), reached out to past vendors for suggestions, attended networking sessions, had my resume re-done, connected with 800+ people on LinkedIn, and have about 300 or so Facebook 'Friends', and knocked on hundreds for doors to get turned away.
Recently I read an article posted on LinkedIn in using social media for the best coverage. The article was mainly targeting businesses in how to get the most out of it and when people are most likely to see your posts. It was based on an in depth study on when the most traffic is which means the most exposure. It was broken down not only by day, but as granular as to the hours of the day.
As an example, you have an eatery and want to post about an upcoming special or your signature dish. You would not want to post it at 11pm when traffic is low but more so during the day between 9 and 5 with 11 to 2 as the peak times for people to catch the post.
Using this theory I am going to try and use the social media in that manner. I have a very valuable product that I need to market and that product is me. So by 'selling myself' on social media routinely just might pick up some interest and get me an interview or better still a job offer.
Looking at the data from market researchers I am drilling down the best times in when to post. From there I am creating several posts in word ahead of time so I can copy and paste them in. With Twitter since you are allowed only 140 characters, MS Word will help with the count. I just need to be very creative in marketing which is not my strong point.
I am going to post as to why you should hire me without being too wordy. Blasts of some of my selling points. A new one each time. Keeping me in the eyes of the viewers. A FB connection posts several times a day with photos of herself. She is keeping herself in the public eye. I have no idea how much business she is getting from FB, but she is very successful over all.
I don't know if I would want to post that much, for it could be considered as spam. But in her case since she has a great body, that is an asset. In my case, I am not very photogenic although my professional profile photo shows up on LinkedIn and Twitter where I use my real name.
I will say that one of my posts on LinkedIn did get positive attention. And one of them was from Key West so I know I hit the right nerve. Now to keep it up.
Not only am I going to post as to my attributes in why you should hire me, but give away some free tips as well. And while I am at it, I am going to create some tutorials and put them on Viemo a video sharing site like You-Tube. The big difference is that I pay for the space and the video length can be a lot longer that You-Tube allows. From there include the URL to the video in my posts.
As for doing that with Twitter, I am going to use Google's URL shortener.
Hopefully that will land me a few interviews and maybe a job offer. In the Keys I hope.
'till next time
